On Friday 9th March, 17 cheerleaders competed at Wickersley Comprehensive in the Rotherham Cheerleading Final. The girls were dressed as zombie school children and began their routine with their cheer chant, ‘We are Thornhill’s Walking Dead!’ This was followed by amazing stunts, jumps, tumbles, a pyramid involving all the athletes and a dance. Our routine was well received by the audience. Also a big thank you to all the parents who came to support us. We were really pleased to be the runners up as there were 8 squads competing. We are now through to the next round on March 20th representing Rotherham in the South Yorkshire School Games. Zombie Power!

On Thursday 8th February the Y3/4 and Y5/6 gymnastics squads competed in the Rotherham Gymnastics Final at Rotherham Leisure Centre. They participated in two events – a floor routine and the vault. There were a few wobbles on the way and the Y3/4 girls came 8th and the Y5/6 girls just missed out on continuing to the next round at the EIS by coming 2nd.

Hockey – South Yorkshire Finals

Two Y5/6 teams, from Thornhill, went to represent our school in the South Yorkshire hockey finals held in Doncaster.  Luckily, the afternoon stayed dry and all the children performed brilliantly, showing determination and skill throughout the matches against some very good sides.

Unfortunately for the girls, their efforts weren’t rewarded with qualification, despite an excellent display by our goalkeeper who was playing in full protective gear for the very first time.

As for the boys, qualification went down to the very last game.  In the four games they played, they didn’t concede a goal and remained undefeated, with our keeper only touching the ball twice.  However, only the one goal was scored in the last game to give them 3 draws and a victory which totaled 6 points.  The post, a couple of good saves and some poor finishing contributed to the lack of goals scored.

The boys hoped for a draw in the final match but unfortunately that wasn’t the case and we lost out by a single point.  Congratulations to the teams that did qualify and good luck.

The stand out performer for the girls was goalkeeper Nitasha and for the boys it was Rizwan otherwise known as ‘the wall’ as nothing got past him.

Rotherham Hockey Finals

A  huge congratulations goes out to both our year 5 and 6 girls and boys hockey teams.  Both teams finished in 1st place at the Rotherham Hockey Finals and will now progress to the South Yorkshire Hockey Finals.

We were honoured this week to be winners at the prestigious Yorkshire Primary P.E and School Sport Premium Sport awards. Two pupils that are highly involved in both school sport and our School Council were invited to accompany Rob Lyne and Mr Little at the awards ceremony which took place at the Pavilions of Harrogate.  We were the winners in the category of Whole School Improvement and received an honourary Plaque which will be proudly displayed in school.

South Yorkshire Sport

Thornhill Primary School’ Sports Teams have once again surpassed all high expectations and previous successes by reaching the South Yorkshire Finals across four different sports.  Our year 3/4 Cricket team, year 3/4 Tennis team, year 5/6 Tri-Golf team and Year 5/6 Netball team have achieved several victories in many rounds of competitions to reach the South Yorkshire School Games.  These teams will now go on to represent Rotherham on the 5th July as part of a huge nationwide event.  Good luck to all the pupils involved, everyone connected with Thornhill Primary are immensely proud of this phenomenal achievement.
