Design and Technology

Design and Technology at Thornhill will allow children to develop their practical skills through encouraging creativity and imagination in each research, design, make and evaluate process. Pupils will design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They will acquire and use a broad range of skills and knowledge whilst drawing on other disciplines.

Pupils will be given the chance to develop essential life skills through preparing and cooking foods; allowing them to not only learn how to cook/prepare foods but to understand and apply the principles of nutrition and food hygiene as well.
As part of the design and make process children will also be given the chance to critique, explore and evaluate a range of existing products. They will also test their ideas and product, along with the work of others in a range of contexts.

Resilient:

Pupils will research products based on solving relevant problems to a given question within a variety of contexts. They then generate ideas towards a final design and plan, testing theories and develop the required skills before making a final product, which they eventually evaluate.
Children will build and apply a depth of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users, so they are fit for purpose.

By developing the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently, pupils will be able to participate successfully in a continually developing technological world.
